Immediate Dentures
The First 24 to 36 Hours with your Immediate Dentures

• Do NOT remove your Dentures out of your mouth. The Dentist will take them out for you at your 24 hour post-operative appointment. After teeth extractions, the surgery site swells slightly so you might not be able to re-insert your Dentures. The Dentures at this stage act as a bandage in helping the surgery site clot and heal.
  • It is normal to have some blood in your mouth which might have a bad taste or odor. Do not use any mouthwash. This is only a temporary situation.
• DO NOT smoke, spit, or rinse. Do not consume any alcohol. Also do not suck any liquids through a straw. Any of the above actions can dislodge a blood clot trying to form in the surgery sites. Any dislodged clots can cause "dry- sockets" which are very painful and can last up to 5 (five) days or longer.
• You should be on a soft diet and stay away from hard, crunchy foods. A milkshake is a good start at first and make sure you drink enough fluids to stay well hydrated.
• Take your medications as directed by the Dentist.
• DO NOT carry on any physical or strenuous exercise. Such activity can also dislodge blood clots as well.
• The Dentist, the next day, will make necessary adjustments to improve the fit and bite of the Dentures.
• You can slowly resume your normal diet and normal physical activity unless otherwise directed by your Dentist.
• The site where your teeth were extracted has left a healing socket. This area, normally, will gradually fill in and shrink. As your gums and bone shrink, a space develops between your gums and Denture. Therefore the Dentures will need to be relined to fit this space.
• Even if you have upper and lower Dentures, you should still have your Dentures checked and have an Oral Cancer Examination every 13 (thirteen) months.
